Andy Murray and Nick Kyrgios made successful returns to the grass courts of the main ATP Tour with opening wins at the Stuttgart Open.

The twice Wimbleton champion overcame Australian qualifier Chris O‘ Connell 6-4, 6-4 and will now meet Ukraine’s Alexander Bublik. Kyrgios, playing his first event of any sort since early April, beat Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic 7-6, 6-3.

Murray is likely to feature in an unusually bumper spread of team tennis that awaits British audiences this autumn.

On Tuesday, Glasgow was awarded the Billie Jean King Cup finals in early November, at the Emirates Arena. A by-product of the successful bid by the Lawn Tennis Association will be Great Britain receiving a wildcard into the 12-nation women’s event from November 8-13.

Anne Keothavong’s squad were beaten in April’s playoff match in the Czech Republic, but will now receive the automatic entry which goes to the hosts.

The controversial situation arises because of the late allocation of this year’s venue due to problems that stretch back to the pandemic. Budapest abruptly pulled out of its hosting agreement in 2021, with Prague stepping in as a late replacement.

Scotland has now filled this year’s vacancy only five months ahead of time, with defending champions Russia not permitted to play due to the Ukraine invasion.

It means an already expanded calendar of domestic events being further added to. Glasgow is hosting four nations in the Davis Cup finals playoff immediately after the US Open, including GB and most likely Murray.

The following week London’s O2 Arena will take its turn in hosting the Laver Cup Team Europe versus Team World event, in which Roger Federer is due to feature after more than a year off the tour.

Germany’s world No 3 Alex Zverev has been added to the list of Wimbleton absentees as he faces eight weeks out with ligament damage sustained in his French Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal.
